Antibiotic use per animal - Infopage
Indicator
Antibiotic use per animal
Definition
This indicator refers to the sales of antimicrobial veterinary medicinal products (except tablets) normalised by the Population Correction Unit (PCU) and it is expressed in mg of active ingredient by PCU (mg/PCU).
The PCU is a technical unit of measurement that provides an estimate of the weight at treatment of livestock and slaughter animals and enables the normalisation of sales data by the animal demographics in each country. The PCU is calculated by multiplying the number of livestock animals (dairy cows, sheep, sows and horses) and slaughtered animals (cattle, goats, pigs, sheep, poultry, rabbits and turkeys) by the theoretical weight at the most likely time for treatment.
